Frugal Find #3: No, seriously, stop buying bottled water.

29 Jul

Whether you end up bringing lunch from home, or buying takeout meals during the workday, shave a couple dollars off — and save soda calories — by reusing a water bottle. New York City has some of the best tap water in the country, and nothing tastes better in this weather than an ice-cold bottle. (Plus, it’s free. Holler.) I don’t even filter mine; not sure if this is good or bad!

I also like to take a bottle on long shopping trips, along with a hand-held fan. Yes, I’m a huge nerd — but a hydrated, non-sweaty one!

Wash and refill an old bottle, and keep it in your fridge, or the break room refrigerator at work. Label it to avoid confusion (although I’m the only one in my office — and in my apartment of three — who does this). If your office has a cafeteria, stock up on lemon packets to add a little summer flavor to your agua. For even more flavor, Lipton To Go makes great little flavor packets (lemonade, green tea, etc). They’re cheap and at most grocery stores.

    Hi Sarah,

Good point about bottled water. Drinking from the tap is safe, but I do prefer the taste of filtered via a Brita pitcher. I can taste the water getting softer after the filter.

Leaving tap water in room temp for an hour or two will help get rid of the chlorine content/taste and smell.

One dorky word of caution–reusing regular plastic bottles, even if washed with soap, can have bacteria build-up and make you sick. These bottles are very difficult to sterilize. I would just go get a good reusable bottle—these are cool and charitable:

That’s a good point, Eric. I should have mentioned that I only use each bottle for a week, maybe two, and I wash it out often with hot water and a mild soap.

good post on reusing water bottles! not only does NYC have great water (seriously, you really do)…but plastic water bottles are a ridiculous waste: of resources/oil/and our money. but heating plastics (ie washign in hot water) can also be bad for your health. try a water bottle like kleenkanteen or something else that is stainless steel. 🙂
