Don’t buy knockoffs

18 Aug

When I used to visit NYC, I’d always return home with a few counterfeit bags — and they were pretty fun for the six months they lasted. It wasn’t until I moved here that I realized what that industry, perceived by so many to be the best way to get a certain look for much less, is doing to our economy and the people who produce authentic, well-made items.

According to the The International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition, New York City loses $1 billion a year when we buy counterfeit goods in places like Canal Street and Chinatown (home of the “Counterfeit Triangle”).

Think twice before you buy “Chanel” bags and “Tiffany-inspired” necklaces for friends back home. Here are my favorite New Yorkish places to buy affordable gifts that help, not hurt, the economy:

• You can search by city and choose designers who live right here in NYC!
Pearl River Mart
Transit Museum Store

Just another way to celebrate how much you love your city. Happy shopping!
