Christmas tree alternatives

8 Dec

Fewer than three weeks til Christmas, and the tree vendors are on the streets in full force, overcharging the masses. The smell of pine as I walk by always makes me want to change careers, so make a lot more money, so I can have a bigger apartment, so I can have a real tree. Alas, I had to figure out something else in the short-term. It’s hardly groundbreaking, but it really gave my room (the only space I have to work with in my apartment) a good dose of seasonal cheer.

After work last night, I stopped by the closest tree vendor to my place, just two blocks away. I asked the guy, busy with a saw, if he minded if I took some of the scrap.

“Have as much as you want!” he said.

I stuffed several branches in a grocery bag, brought them home and cut them into smaller pieces over the sink, being careful that each one still had a pretty top so it looked natural. I stuck ’em in a stumpy vase, tied some ribbon around, and poof — a little Christmas tree plant! (Fig. 1) It’s not the cutest thing I’ve ever made, but it smells good and looks OK.

I also used a bigger piece to lay on my window sill and enhance my glitter tree from TJ Maxx, 2-foot strand of battery-operated lights from Michael’s and flameless Target candle (Fig. 2). I hear they are making them with remote controls now. What the what?!?

Reminder to sign up for the NewNewYorkers volunteer day and meetup!

23 Sep

What we’ll be doing on Oct. 17: Along with 8,000 other New Yorkers, we’ll paint murals and line games on school playgrounds, organize school libraries and plant flowers at IS 318 in Brooklyn! It’s right over the bridge and very easy to get to. We’ll all travel there together — stay tuned for details!

This will be a great chance for readers of NewNewYorkers, newcomers and established citygoers alike, to do something great for the kids of this city, and meet each other, ask questions, maybe even meet a new cute guy or gal! Hell, is that’s not incentive for you to join my team… 🙂

Afterward, we’ll go for a snack and mingle some more!

Visit our team page and click on ‘join our team’ to sign up. Invite all your friends! Not-so-new New Yorkers are welcome too!
